If you receive Supplemental Security Income, check two different questions before accepting credit: what evidence a lender requests, and how loan proceeds may be treated under SSI rules. A loan decision and a benefits decision are not the same thing.

Confirm which benefit program you receive
SSI is a needs-based program administered by Social Security. It is different from Social Security Disability Insurance and retirement benefits. People can receive more than one type of benefit, so use the name on your award or verification letter rather than assuming every Social Security payment follows the same rules.

Separate loan proceeds from retained resources
SSA’s cash-loan guidance distinguishes a bona fide loan from an arrangement that is not a bona fide loan. For a borrower, cash from a bona fide loan is not income under that guidance. Money still held in the following month is treated as a resource. If an arrangement is not a bona fide loan, the treatment differs. SSA must evaluate the facts and applicable rules; the word “loan” on a message is not enough.

- 3The following monthHow much, if any, remains, and what rules apply?
This diagram summarizes questions, not a benefits eligibility decision.
Do not rely on a promise that borrowing “cannot affect benefits.” A separate lender’s willingness to accept income evidence does not establish the SSI treatment of the borrowed money.
Use a month-boundary checklist
| Money received | Next month begins | Question to verify |
|---|---|---|
| September 30 | October 1 | Will any proceeds still be retained across that boundary? |
| October 1 | November 1 | What retained amount must be considered at the next boundary? |
The calculator returns a calendar boundary and a list of questions. It does not calculate a resource limit, payment reduction or an exemption. A zero entered as retained funds means only what you entered; other resources or program rules are not evaluated. Do not dispose of resources or alter records based on this tool.
Prepare income evidence without unnecessary health data
| Item | Reason to discuss it | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Benefits verification letter | Shows the program and payment information. | Ask which pages and period the application requires. |
| Deposit record | Shows a payment received. | Use the approved secure process and confirm redaction rules. |
| Other documented income | May help explain total household cash flow. | Report it accurately; do not assume acceptance or eligibility. |
| Medical records | Not needed by this public checklist. | Do not upload them here or email them with a general question. |
If a creditor gives a decision notice, read the actual reason and the contact or dispute instructions. Receipt of public-assistance income is a protected ground under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act; that does not create a guarantee of loan approval.
CFPB — When a credit application is denied because of a credit reportProtect essential living costs
Write down the money available after housing, utilities, food, medication, existing obligations and a buffer for irregular expenses. A predictable benefit deposit can still leave too little room for a new installment. Use the cash-flow planner with your own amounts, and compare its result with the complete cost in the offer review page.
A repayment plan should not require skipping essential needs or repeatedly borrowing again. When the budget is already short, look at payment assistance and alternatives before beginning another request.
Get a program-specific answer before committing
Ask SSA about benefit treatment and reporting. Ask the named creditor about the loan agreement, acceptable income documents and repayment. These are separate responsibilities. A website support representative cannot give a binding SSI eligibility decision.
- Have the receipt date, written agreement and amount still held available for the SSA discussion.
- Ask what must be reported and which records should be retained.
- Keep the response and date with your own records; do not place sensitive details in a public calculator.
Questions about this page
Is SSI the same as SSDI?
No. They are different programs. Confirm the benefit name on your documents, particularly if you receive more than one benefit. This page’s loan-resource explanation concerns SSI.
Are loan proceeds treated as income for SSI?
SSA’s guidance says cash received from a bona fide loan is not income to the borrower. Whether the arrangement qualifies and how other rules apply are questions for SSA, not this checklist.
Can unspent loan funds become a resource?
Under the cited SSA cash-loan guidance, proceeds retained in the month after receipt are a resource. The tool only identifies that month boundary; it does not decide your eligibility.
Does this page determine my benefit eligibility?
No. It cannot assess your full circumstances, resources, exclusions or reporting obligations. Use the official SSA contact route for a program-specific answer.
Which income evidence may be requested?
A benefit verification letter or deposit record may be relevant categories of evidence. Confirm the exact documents and period in the actual application before sharing.
Should I provide medical details to this checklist?
No. It needs only a program category and optional planning figures. Do not enter medical information, a Social Security number or bank credentials.
